Beat the Lie Detector

Posted on Wednesday 6 May 2009

Every good poker player is his own personal lie detector. Each guy at the casino is looking around for any change in your demeanor or physiology. Hopefully you aren’t hooked up to any electrodes (if you are, I don’t want to know what kind of game you’re playing), so they won’t be able to measure your sweat glands or heart rate, but they’re still going to look for any signs as to what cards you’re holding. Here are a few ways to keep them from finding out your poker tells.

1.Control your breathing. Most people tend to breathe heavily when they get excited. It’s nothing to be ashamed of, but it is definitely something to hide at the poker table. When you’re A-K of Spades turns into a royal flush, focus on keeping your breathing steady so you can get some one to call your all-in.

2. Steady your hands. This one’s a bit tougher to control, but with a little concentration, you can do it. When you get overly excited, your hands tend to tremble. When the flush hits and you want to raise, make sure you can keep your hands still before you push your casino chips in.
